Gilbane was founded in 1873 as a carpentry shop by two brothers, William & Thomas Gilbane, on the principles of hard work, attention to quality craftsmanship, and basic honesty. These basic principles formed the cornerstone upon which the reputation of Gilbane was built. The brothers also developed a family-based team spirit that became an unmistakable trademark of the company. They built homes so well that their owners boasted (and still do) “Built by Gilbane” at resale. Before long, Gilbane craftsmen were building hospitals, churches, schools, public buildings, and private homes.

Today, Gilbane, Inc. is still a family-run, privately-held firm with 136 years of continuous operations, more than 2,000 employees, and managing more than $3 billion nationally. It is ranked one of the top construction and development firms, incorporating two companies under one umbrella: Gilbane Development Company (founded in 1970) and Gilbane Building Company. Gilbane Development is the project development, financing and ownership arm of Gilbane, and has gained recognition both locally and nationally for its waterfront community developments.
