Seattle
This waterfront city of 560,000, birthplace of Microsoft and Starbucks, put itself on the map in 1962, when it hosted the Century 21 Exposition world’s fair. A soaring relic of that fair – and a first stop for most tourists - is the famous Space Needle. Stunning views from the Needle’s 500-foot high rotating restaurant and observation deck take in 14,410-foot-tall Mount Rainier, the Cascade Mountains, Puget Sound and the bustling metropolis below. Down on the streets, history buffs study turn-of-the-century architectural detail in historic Pioneer Square, art lovers thrill to contemporary exhibits and African collections in the newly renovated Seattle Art Museum, and music buffs bone up on rock ‘n’ roll.
The city takes pride in its sports teams – the Seattle Mariners and Seattle Seahawks – and its world-class symphony and ballet. Broadway producers know Seattle has one of the liveliest theater scenes in the country. A new Olympic Sculpture Park creates drama at water’s edge with its monumental modern art, and the city’s famed chefs create drama in the kitchen with daring fusions of culinary styles. Located just 75 miles south of Anacortes, Seattle is an easy drive away for a day or weekend adventure.
